Creating Overlay Maps Prev | Table of Contents | Next

Creating an overlay map with XViewSDTS is the electronic equivalent of laying a sheet of clear plastic over a paper map and drawing your own symbols on it. You end up with a custom map which is a composite of the base map and the overlay, but the base map itself is not changed.

Your overlay map can be any size, it need not be the same size as the SDTS surface or surfaces that you are using for a base map.

The map projection and coordinate system for your overlay map will be the same as the projection and coordinate system that you are using to display the base map. So the size of you overlay is only limited by the limits of the coordinate system and the practical limits of how large an area the map projection can display without significant distortion.

The following sections of this user guide will show you how to add your objects to the overlay map, edit them, and (if need be) delete them:

Once you have added objects, you will probably want to use the items in the Edit menu to add attributes fields and graphic characteristics, and the Edit Attributes item in the right click menu to add and edit the attributes themselves. (See Edit Menu and Edit Attributes.)

Of course, as you work on your overlay map, you will want to save it frequently to avoid profanity if your power goes out. (See File Save.)
