The Place-n-Time viewer application has two main purposes.

First, it allows you to view map data that has been made available on the Internet from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) for free download in the Spatial Data Transfer Standard (SDTS) format.

Second, it allows you to view maps created by users of Dapper Mapper's XViewSDTS. Such maps use the USGS data as a base map and add an overlay map with custom objects.

This viewer application does not allow you to create custom maps. To do that you need Dapper Mapper's XViewSDTS.

Base Maps

Five themes of SDTS data are supported:

Boundaries (such as state, county, township, parks, wildlife refuges, etc.)
Hydrography (such as lakes, ponds, rivers, streams, wetlands, and other water features)
Roads and Trails (from hiking trails to super highways)
Railroads (including rail yards, sidings, etc.)
Miscellaneous Transportation (such as airports, power lines, etc.)

SDTS data is available in three different levels of detail:

Small Scale
Intermediate Scale
Large Scale

SDTS data is available for all areas of the United States, although not all themes are available at all scales in all areas.

Overlay Maps

Overlay maps contain objects that an XViewSDTS user has added to the base map. Two kinds of objects are supported: pointnodes and lines.

The pointnodes are used as anchor points for labels, symbols, and rings.
The lines are used to show (surprise!) linear features such as roads.
